What Do Thai Baht Notes and Coins Look Like?

Thailand's money is the Thai baht, written THB4. The Bank of Thailand prints notes worth 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 baht, in a 2023 record6.

The newest notes are plastic, not paper. The 50 and 100 baht notes became polymer on 21 November 2025, after the 20 baht note switched on 24 March 20227. The 1,000 baht note shows Rama IX and Rama X together on the back, based on a 2018 record8.

One baht splits into 100 satang, much like a dollar splits into cents9. Coins in daily use run from 25 satang up to 10 baht, as of 20269.

Cash or Card: Which Should You Carry?

Cash still rules in Thailand. In 2024, cash was 78 percent of what tourists spent, cards were about 20 percent, and QR payments across borders were just 0.2 percent10.

Carry some cash with you. The numbers show most tourist spending in Thailand still runs through cash, not a card10.

Are US Dollars Accepted in Thailand?

Thai baht is what you need for almost every purchase11. US dollars work only at places that choose to take foreign cash, mostly hotels and some upscale venues11.

Carry baht for everyday spending, like food stalls, taxis and shops. Keep US dollars only as a backup for hotels that are willing to take them.

Where Can You Get Thai Baht, and What Does It Cost?

You can change money at banks, ATMs or exchange booths12. Airports, hotels and tourist area counters usually give worse rates12.

Most Thai banks charge 220 to 250 baht for each ATM withdrawal on a foreign card, as of 202613. AEON Bank charges the least, 150 baht, not free as older data once suggested13. That is down from an earlier 2023 estimate of 250 to 350 baht, so the general fee has changed too1.

A single Thai ATM withdrawal is capped at 10,000 to 30,000 baht, based on a 2023 survey1. Plan on more than one withdrawal for a long trip.

At a dedicated exchange booth chain like SuperRich, changing money instead of using a bank counter at Suvarnabhumi airport can save roughly 2,200 to 2,500 baht on a large exchange, since the booth charges no commission14.

What to Do Before You Leave for Thailand

Pack a card that works well abroad, and always decline the currency conversion offer shown on an ATM screen1.

Tell your card issuer your travel dates so they do not block your card by mistake.

If you carry more than USD 20,000 in cash, declare it to Thai customs when you enter or leave, under a 2023 rule15. Taking Thai money out of the country is capped too, at 500,000 baht to bordering countries and 50,000 baht to anywhere else, as of 202316.
